Christian Theology for Everyone with Peter Pikkert

Evangelical theology consists of reflecting on the nature of the Triune God and how he relates to man from a bible-as-a-whole perspective. This huge subject ranges from God’s eternal plan of salvation, to creation, the fall into sin, the nature of salvation, human responses and the future state.

In 21 sessions spread out over two years we hope to touch on each of these topics, as well as various others. As we think biblically and systematically about them, we form a Christian framework of thinking (a Christian worldview) which should help us “be on our guard and stand firm in the faith (1 Cor. 16:13) as well as “prepare us to give an answer to those who ask for the reason of the hope that we have” (1 Pet. 3:15).

Starting Thursday, September 26 at 7:00 PM in room 222

September 26: What is Theology?
What is theology? When did the church start thinking theologically? How can it be important when good Christians have such different ideas about it? What different approached to theology are there, and how do they relate to each other? What are the prerequisites of good theological thinking?

October 3: The Existence of God
What are the arguments for the existence of God? What is their value? Do they tell us anything about God as revealed in the Bible?

October 10: Divine Revelation and Scriptures (1)
What does “knowing God” mean? In what ways did/does God reveal himself? What claims does the Bible make about itself?

October 17: Divine Revelation and Scriptures (2)
How was the Bible given? What do the words inspiration, infallible, plenary and inerrant mean? What about purported errors and contradiction in the Bible? How can we know the Bible contains the right books? Does God still reveal things about himself? Why is submitting to God’s word a good thing?

October 24: What is God like?
How can finite, sinful man know the holy, transcendent God? What are his attributes? What is the difference between his communicable and incommunicable attributes? What are his names?

October 31: The Trinity
What does the Bible mean when it states that God is one? What is the biblical basis for the doctrine of the Trinity? How have people tried to make sense of it?

November 7: Creation
What does the Bible teach about God as creator? What do the creation stories tell us about people? Why did God create the universe? Why did he create human beings? How comprehensive is the explanatory power of science? How does the doctrine of creation relate to the theory of evolution?

November 14: Mankind and the Doctrine of Sin (1)
What are the fundamental differences between people and animals? Is man a dichotomy (body and soul) or a trichotomy (body, soul and spirit)? What is the origin of the human soul? How has sin affected the image of God in mankind? How does the Bible describe sin?

November 21: Mankind and the Doctrine of Sin (2)
What is the relationship between God’s law and sin? Are people who live without knowledge of God’s law culpable when they break it? What theories about sin have Christians have held? What are the effects of sin on mankind? Where did Satan and the demonic world come from? Can I stop worrying about sin since the Bible teaches that although all have sinned Jesus forgives us? Is there such a thing as the unpardonable sin?

November 28: Who is Jesus Christ?
What are some inadequate views about the person of Christ? Why do Christians insist that Jesus Christ is fully God, and why is that so important? Why do Christians insist that Jesus was also fully man, and why is that so important? Why does doctrine of the virgin birth matter? Why was it necessary for Jesus to be sinless? Was it possible, if only in theory, that Jesus could have sinned?
