Our Beliefs

At West Highland we desire to be faithful to the time-tested teachings of Jesus Christ and his Apostles. Our desire and motto is To Make the Word of God Fully Known and the People of God Fully Mature. To help us do this we affirm the following historic creeds and statements of faith:

  • The Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.

    Amen.

  • The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible, and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made. Who, for us men for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried, and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.

    Amen.

  • The Creed of Chalcedon

We, then, following the holy Fathers, all with one consent, teach men to confess one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, the same perfect in Godhead and also perfect in manhood; truly God and truly man, of a reasonable [rational] soul and body; consubstantial [co-essential] with the Father according to the Godhead, and consubstantial with us according to the Manhood; in all things like unto us, without sin; begotten before all ages of the Father according to the Godhead, and in these latter days, for us and for our salvation, born of the Virgin Mary, the God-bearer, according to the Manhood; one and the same Christ, Son, Lord, Only begotten, to be acknowledged in two natures, inconfusedly, unchangeably, indivisibly, inseparably; the distinction of natures being by no means taken away by the unity, but rather the property of each nature being preserved, and concurring in one Person and one Subsistence, not parted or divided into two persons, but one and the same Son, and only begotten, God the Word, the Lord Jesus Christ; as the prophets from the beginning [have declared] concerning him, and the Lord Jesus Christ himself has taught us, and the Creed of the holy Fathers has handed down to us.

What is the Gospel?

The life-changing truth of God’s love and grace

At the heart of Christianity is the gospel message which is the good news of what God has done to rescue and restore us. It is not just a set of beliefs or religious ideas, but the message of hope, redemption, and eternal life. The gospel is deeply personal. It speaks to our deepest needs and offers the greatest gift. It can be understood through four key truths: God, Man, Christ, and Response.

  • God

God is the holy, loving, and sovereign Creator of all things. He made the world and everything in it, including us. Every breath we take, every moment of joy, and every beauty we experience points to a God who is glorious, powerful, and good. We were created to know Him, love Him, and walk with Him in relationship.

"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1)

"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." (Isaiah 6:3)

God is perfectly holy, which means He is completely pure and separate from all sin. He is also perfectly just, which means He will not overlook wrongdoing. At the same time, He is full of love and mercy. His justice demands that sin be dealt with, but His love seeks to rescue and restore those He has made. These truths form the foundation of the gospel.

  • Humanity

Though we were made in God’s image to know and love Him, every one of us has turned away from Him. The Bible calls this sin. It is not just about breaking rules or doing bad things. Sin is the condition of our hearts that leads us to live independently from God. We choose our own way instead of His. As a result, we are separated from God and fall short of the life He intended for us.

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23)

"For the wages of sin is death..." (Romans 6:23a)

Sin brings brokenness: within us, in our relationships, and in the world around us. We try to fix this through good behavior, personal improvement, or religion, but none of these efforts can make us right with God. We need someone to save us.

  • Jesus Christ

God provided that salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus entered into our world, fully God and fully man. He lived a perfect, sinless life and showed us what love, truth, and righteousness look like. But more than that, He came to rescue us.

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)

"Christ died for our sins... he was buried... he was raised on the third day." (1 Corinthians 15:3–4)

On the cross, Jesus took the punishment for our sins. He bore the wrath of God in our place, making a way for us to be forgiven. His resurrection three days later confirmed that death and sin had been defeated. Because of what Jesus has done, we can be made new and brought back into relationship with God.

Jesus is not just a good moral teacher or another religious figure in a long line of others. He is the risen Lord and Savior who offers forgiveness, healing, and eternal life to everyone who puts their trust in Him.

  • Our Response

This message demands a personal response. God offers us salvation as a gift, but it must be received. We receive it by turning away from sin and putting our full trust in Jesus Christ to save us. This is not about trying harder or cleaning ourselves up first. It is about acknowledging our need and believing that Jesus is enough.

"If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9)

"Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out." (Acts 3:19)

When we respond in faith, God forgives us completely. He gives us His Spirit to live within us. He adopts us into His family and begins the process of transforming us from the inside out. We begin to live with a new purpose, a new identity, and a new hope.

This is the gospel: God created us for Himself. We rebelled and walked away. Jesus came to save and restore us. And now, through repentance and faith, we are invited into the life we were made for.

This is not just good news. It is the best news in the world. And it is for you!

At West Highland, we believe this message changes everything. If you have questions, or if you want to talk to someone about what it means to follow Jesus, we would love to hear from you. You are always welcome here.
