The Wonder of the Lord’s Day
I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet.
The Apostle John, Revelation 1:10
It has become unfashionable today to refer to Sundays as “the Lord’s Day.” This is something we should all mourn. For the Apostle John and the Christians of the first century, the Lord’s Day meant the day of Christ’s resurrection. For them the celebration of Jesus’ triumph over death and the grave was not to be limited to one Sunday in the year. It was the focus of every Sunday when they gathered together to worship in homes and other places throughout the empire.
Most people in the empire would probably have understood the Lord’s Day as a reference to the emperor’s feast when Caesar was to be praised and the rule of Rome celebrated for holding the world together in peace and justice. This was not the first time, nor would it be the last, that Christians took a pagan word or phrase and transformed its meaning.
For John, the Lord’s Day was a time to experience the wonderful ministration of the Spirit in which he could hear again the loud voice of the One who walks among his churches and speaks to them his life-giving Word. The Lord’s Day is a wonderful gift in which we, with brothers and sisters all around might lift our voices together in praise and petition and enjoy communion with God by his Spirit.
